What is it, how to you advance it and what does it do for you?
For many of you, you’ve been told that you must be “situationally aware” which is true, and… there’s more to it! In the OPMINDSET programs I talk about the 4 Points of Awareness which include:
- The Situation
- The Environment
These four points converge to create a wholistic and dynamic awareness profile that enables you to make rapid assessments and sound decisions. Let’s take a quick look at each…
The situation. It’s what I like to call “the arm sweep.” Basically, what’s happening now and what may happen in the moments to follow. It allows for a predictive posture without future-casting, making assumptions or creating expectations. NOTE: In order to be present to the situation at hand make sure you are not operating from a set of biases or preconceived notions.
The environment. We rarely pay attention to how the environment impacts us or how we impact the environment. Look at the make up (people), culture, terrain, weather and general conditions of the environment you operate in. How does it impact you and how do you impact it?
Others. Being aware of others, not just in action, but in energy, attitude, posture, “vibe” as well as their expectations, biases, backgrounds, fears, wants, desires and aspirations. Having a deeper awareness of others is one of the most critical aspects of navigating through each interaction and may produce surprising results!
Yourself. Yes, you! You need to know what is going on for you right now, in the moments that matter. If you’re carrying a shitty morning into a shitty situation it only makes it worse. Ask yourself, what do I need right now to operate the way I want to operate, then give it to yourself. If you feel like you’re overwhelmed, pushing against it or maxed out, find a moment of recovery, breath and take the necessary actions to produce the actual result you want!
YOUR ACTION ITEMS FOR THE DAY:
- Mentally review recent events and situations you’ve encountered with the 4 Points os awareness in mind.
- Look at how you can create mental branches or versions based on your new look at those situations.
- Have a discussion with others and take the time to visualize with mental rehearsals.
Now… make sure to hop into the Facebook Group today and post ONE thing about how this is different from your “norm” or how you have implemented these ideas in the past.
That’s it for today! Here are some great resources for you to explore if you’d like to dig in a little deeper…
